Mixed Media Bumblebee

Firstly, I'd like to wish all of our US Readers a Happy 4th July. Hope you have a wonderful day!

For today's post, I'd like to share how I made my bumblebee connectors for last months AJE Theme Challenge. The theme was summer and I decided I wanted my design to portray a summer's garden, so I came up with these mixed media connectors to design around.

My version is made in ceramic clay, but it would work equally well in polymer or air drying clays.

To begin, you will need clay, and decorating colours (either glaze or paints), wire, and metal sheet, plus tools.

Take a small lump of clay and roll in to a long egg shape.

Divide the shape in half by pressing a line around the centre.

Using a flat tool, smooth each side of the line to remove the sharp edge.

Choose which end you want to be the head and divide that section in half as before, by carving a line around the centre.

Smooth the edges again.

Draw an eye shape on either side of the head, pressing around the edge of the line to make the eye stand out.

Clean up the carved areas with a damp paintbrush.

Using a knife or other thin sharp tool, start at the rear of the bee and scratch lines in a circle to start adding the texture of the fur.

Continue adding the fur texture in rings around the body of the bee stopping at the head.

On either side add a slot through the middle section of the body. This needs to be wide enough to add the wings so check the thickness of your metal. If working in ceramic clay, make sure you allow for shrinkage.

And finally, add high temperature or other wire to turn the bee in to a link.

Originally I was going to glaze these in black, but decided that wasn't very summery, so I went for a rusty matt brown.

To make the wings, I drew the shape on to a sticker and put this on to copper sheet for cutting. I used temporary stickers so I could peel the original off and use it again for the others to make sure that each wing would be the same shape. Each wing has a tab where it can be inserted and glued in to the body.

To add texture on to the wings, I decided to etch them. Stop out fluid was painted on and they were etched for about an hour and a half.

I don't always like the wobbliness that is created with the etching fluid, but it gives the wings a brilliant texture.

After treating with Liver of Sulphur and tumbling, the bees were ready for assembly.

Using a toothpick, I put two part epoxy resin in to the slots on the bodies and added the wings, holding them in place with a rubber band while the glue set.

And here's one of them in the finished necklace.

I think copper and clay work really well together and my brain is buzzing with ideas for other ways to incorporate metal into new work.

Summertime - June's theme challenge

Summertime and the living is easy...*

For me - I hear Ella. Maybe Janis Joplin's version is more you? Norah Jones?
The very phrase reads in my head as a slow drawl, unhurried, redolent of heat and relaxation.
I confess that  I am writing this post after a Memorial Day weekend at the beach that was relaxed and unhurried; marking the beginning of the summer season.
Summer isn't all beach! So many wonderful treats and traditions of the season.

So for our theme COM this month - the team decided to keep it easy, breezy...
What does summer mean to you?

Diana: "Beachcombing at the shore ... wading in the rolling surf and searching for treasures on the beach. I also don't mind a relaxing, sunny day in the pool with the smell of bbq cooking."

Caroline: "Lazy summer evenings...when the heat of the day is gone and you get the warm and fuzzy end of day sunshine. Love it at home in the garden or sitting outside our tent on holidays.

Jennifer: "Nothing says summer more than sitting around a fire at dusk with friends and a bottle or two of wine, the lightning bugs out, kids catching them and temporarily putting them in a jar, making s'mores, or playing ghosts in the graveyard or flashlight tag."

Karen:  "Not wearing shoes. I couldn't wait for it to get warm enough I could start going without shoes all summer"

For me ( and Susan agreed) the beach is a definite summer tradition. I have always lived a few hours from an ocean, either one, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Jenny's "Summer" collage. Growing up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, crabs, done right in Old Bay, were and essential  summer tradition. They still make me think of my grandfather to this day.

Footnote:
The song "Summertime" was composed by George Gershwin in 1934 for the opera/musical "Porgy and Bess" which came out the following year.
Lyrics: Summertime, and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin'
So hush little baby, Don't you cry

One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing
And you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky
But 'til that morning, there ain't nothin' can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin' by

Tracking in a bit of sand...

Happy Saturday!  Just got back from a short beach vacay with my family and it was so pleasant!  The weather was absolutely perfect for the beach, and I did lots of relaxing on the sand, staring at the rolling waves.

A peaceful shot from a morning walk on my beach vacation.

It struck me how inspirational the ocean and beach are to many jewelry artists in their designs, so I thought I would feature some of the gorgeous components and jewelry our very own AJE team has to offer in that theme!

Caroline's sweet little jelly fish beads for dangling on necklaces...luckily there were no jelly fish in the water!

I love this jelly fish charm by Diana.

These gorgeous glass headpins by Jennifer also remind me of jelly fish!

Jenny's moonlit wave pendant evokes wonderful memories of standing on the balcony at night and listening to the endless waves hitting the shore!

Sweet and colorful polymer clay starfish by Kristi.

Kristen's amazing beadwork!

I love the color on the beach relics by Karen...reminds me of those early morning beach walks looking for treasure hidden in the sand!

Linda's lovely starfish necklace is the perfect jewelry to keep thoughts of the ocean with you.

Yummy beach pebbles by Lesley.

Stunning glass pendant by Sue
My polymer clay seashell connector.

Going through all these pieces takes me back to that peaceful place when I was walking on the beach...I want to go back!

Seagull tracks in the sand!

AJE Eye Candy - The Greens of Summer

We had a beautiful weekend here in the Pacific NW,
we've had only a handful of 70 degree days all year
and we doubled that number this weekend.
So this weeks Eye Candy is a tribute to that!
