End Of Year AJE Earring Challenge

Welcome to the last AJE Earring Challenge Reveal.  We are so happy that you have chosen to play along with us.  I think there must be many of you who, like me, did not have new earrings every single week in 2013, but who made an effort to keep up with the challenge as best you could.  Congratulations to you!
Some of my earrings displayed in a wooden cigar box that team member, Francesca Watson gave me.
I sold a lot of earrings during my last (and only) Christmas show, so I was glad I'd made so many over the course of this past year. I hope that many of the earrings you made have found new homes too.
Two of my earring displays at a recent Christmas show.
Here are a few of the earrings that caught my eye, from the past 2 weeks.

These earring were made by Claire Fabian.  I love the ancient, rustic look she achieved on her handmade polymer components!
This next pair of earrings, by Alice Peterson features beaded beads by AJE team member Kristen Stevens and lampwork by Dancing Frog Jewelry.  The lampwork and beaded beads look spectacular together.
And finally, I want to highlight this pretty pair of earrings by Mon Urkhart. The beautiful bead-woven Forget-Me-Nots were made by Nancy Dale. I was not familiar with Nancy's work until I wrote today's blog post.  Her bead weaving is gasp-worthy!  You should visit her Etsy shop and blog.

Did some of you manage to get all 52 pairs of earrings made?  Please let us know in the comments below. Curious minds want to know!  And congratulations to all of us who took on such a big challenge.

This will be my last post for 2013.  I want to thank all our readers and my teammates for the many ways you have enriched my life this past year.  I wish you the happiest of holidays.

If you have earrings to share this week, be sure to link up for this last reveal.  Enjoy!

Earring Challenge Reveal 9 - Weeks 17 & 18/52

Welcome to the 9th reveal for the AJE challenge and Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!

If you're blogging about your designs then don't forget to add your link at the bottom of this post.

It was very hard for me to choose just four pairs of earrings this week to highlight - sigh.  Please know that everyone is making wonderful earrings and I hope everyone visits the AJE Pinterest Board to check them all out!

First up is a pair of heart earrings by Kumi Fisher.  I love the copper hearts she made and the colors of the beads on the stems!

Next is Claire Fabian.  I just love the texture and color on her polymer beads.
Sundance Gems - pretty lampwork beads attached to the ear wires by silk ribbon!  What a cool idea!

And finally, very pretty enameled beads and bead caps by Melissa Meman!  I love the colors, so very springy and bright!

Join us in two weeks for another reveal of the Art Jewelry Elements Earring Challenge!

Wire Macrame Earring Tutorial

When I submitted these earrings for the AJE challenge a few months ago a lot of people asked me about the the wire macrame technique so I decided to put together a tutorial which you can adapt to your own design. I had a little difficulty photographing this today as it's a two handed technique and my tripod has gone awol but you can find the basic knotting technique here if you need clarification.

Materials

Approx. 6" 0.9mm bronze core wire
Approx. 12" 0.5mm bronze knotting wire
2  focal beads
2 accent beads/dangles
1 pair of earwires
Headpins/wire
2 pairs of pliers
Table vice or something to secure your wire

Note: Different types and gauges of wire can be used for this and these will give different effects but remember that you may need to adjust the length of the wire according to the gauge used.

Step one
Secure your core wire to something that will keep it firmly in place -  I use a table top vice but you could also wrap it round a rigid object - don't forget to cut extra wire if you do the latter.

Step 2
Place your knotting wire beneath the core wire and bring both ends up around the sides. Pass the wire on your left over the wire in your right and back under the core wire and up through the loop of the wire on the right.

Grip both ends of the wire with your pliers and pull to tighten keeping an even tension. Don't be tempted to do this with your hands (especially with bronze wire) - it may not hurt at first but you'll find you have very sore fingers the next day - I know I tried!

Step 3
Repeat step 2 taking care to pass the wire in the same direction as this will create the spiral pattern.

Continue repeating step one and the spiral pattern will begin to emerge...

Step 4
When the spiral is the length you want remove it from the vice and wrap one end of the wire around the core wire 3 times, cut off the excess and press against the core wire. Repeat the process with the other end of the wire wrapping it over the first wrap. Trim the excess and file any sharp edges.  This will form the top of the earring.

Step 5
Trim the top end of the core wire to remove any vice marks, file the end and turn a simple loop. Gently push the spiral up to sit snugly against the loop.

Step 6
At the other end add your focal bead, trim and file the wire and turn another simple loop or warp a loop if preferred.

Step 7
Add a headpin to an accent bead and turn a simple loop to create a dangle then add this to the bottom of your earring.

Step 9
Add an earwire of your choice.

Step 10
Repeat this process for the second earring to complete the pair.

Step 11
This technique is greatly enhanced by oxidising the wire and polishing back the high points to give added depth and texture. I've done this when the earrings are complete but if your beads are not waterproof you will need to treat the wire before you make up the earrings.

And there you have your wire macrame earrings.

I hope you'll have a go at making these and perhaps we'll see some of them coming up on the AJE Earring Challenge Pinterest board.

Earring Challenge Reveal 3 (weeks 5-6/52)

Welcome to the third reveal of our AJE earring challenge which focuses on weeks 5 and 6 of our 52 week marathon. I hope you're enjoying creating for this event - It's become something of a ritual for me to go and check out our challenge Pinterest board with my first coffee of the day and it's great to see what a huge variety of designs there are. Hopefully these will also help to inspire everyone to try new ideas throughout the year and develop their repertoires.

Here are just a few of my favourites from the past two weeks..

I love these gorgeous rustic earrings from Claire Lockwood - the combination of textures and shapes and the mix of earthy tones with a bright pop of turquoise just work so well. It's a great photo too, clean and sharp with the props providing depth and interest but not overwhelming the earrings.

I was also very taken with this striking set by Kimmy Sayers with a very cool (icy even!) urban sort of look. These must have been a devil to photograph - I know I struggle with clear glass, but I think  Kimmy has done a lovely job.

My next choice comes from my AJE team mate Melissa Mehman and what grabbed my attention here is the fabulous rich mahogany colour and texture of the copper and the way it catches the light. Green is always a perfect pairing with copper and the choice and variety of beads add layers of interest and all finished perfectly with the contrast of silver ear wires.

And finally we have this  pretty Boho design by Cynthia Machata which I can just envisage on a hot summers day at the beach. I'm fond of using fiber in my own earring designs and I think it adds a real sense of playfulness to these.

So...now I can't wait to see what's in store for the weeks ahead - the next reveal will be on Sunday 3rd March and will cover weeks 7 & 8. Don't forget to mark your pins with the week and reveal number so that you have a chance of being featured here.

If you are blogging about you designs from weeks 5 and 6 you can add your links below and hop off on a challenge tour. Have fun.

Tutorial - Blackberries and Raspberry earrings

Our year-long Earrings Challenge has got me sketching out lots of ideas for new designs! I've also been spending perhaps a little too much time browsing Etsy for art beads and components, but it's been fun discovering new (well, new to me!) bead makers. And yes, a few beads obviously did find their way into  my shopping basket. Well, I am a bead addict, after all!

Some of those beads arrived yesterday afternoon, so I thought I'd share with you a new tutorial for a pair of earrings that I've made with them, the pair that you can see above. Another reason for sharing this with you is that I wanted to try out my new photographing set up, which you can read more about on my own blog.

You will need:
approx 40cm 0.8mm wire - I used sterling silver but you can use copper if you wish.
beads to hang below the wire shape
round nosed pliers, flat nosed pliers, wire cutters
permanent marker pen and ruler
hammer and bench block
8mm and 10mm mandrels
needle file (or a nail file will do!)

1. Cut two 12cm lengths of 0.8mm wire and mark 4cm from one end of each piece.
2.Holding the pen mark on one of the pieces of wire against the 10mm mandrel, bend the wire to form a teardrop shape. You want the pen mark to be at the middle of the bottom of the teardrop, and the teardrop to measure roughly 2cm in length. Repeat with the second length of wire.
3. Hammer the bottom and sides of each teardrop.

4. Use flat nosed pliers to turn the long wire tail so that it is vertical from the top of the teardrop, and the short tail so that it goes across the long one at a right angle.
5. Twist the short tail around the long tail to close the teardrop as you would a wrapped loop. Try to turn the wraps on the second teardrop in the opposite direction to the first for a more professional finish.
6. Turn a U shape in the wire above the teardrop using the 8mm mandrel to form the ear wire.

7. Flick out the last 5mm or so of the wire to give the ear wire a more professional finish, and file the end of the wire to make it comfortable to pass through your ear.
8. Hammer the front of the bend in the ear wire to strengthen it.
9. Cut two pieces of 0.8mm wire long enough to thread your beads on and form a wrapped loop above them. My pieces were 8cm long. Hammer one end of each to create a hammered headpin. Thread your beads on the headpins and link them onto the teardrops with wrapped loops.

I decided to oxidise my earrings as for me they were too bright with those lovely bright lampwork beads! The gorgeous purple disc beads that I've used are by AlishaWhite on Etsy, and the smallest beads are Czech glass. The lovely little green lampwork spacers were made for me by a friend who moved from lampwork to metalwork a few years ago!

If you make a pair of earrings using my tutorial I'd love to see them!

Earring Challenge Eye Candy!

Have you signed up for our earrings challenge yet? I'm really excited about it. I can sometimes get so caught up with the day to day running of my business and teaching that I don't make enough time for just having fun and playing with the beautiful beads sitting in dishes on my desk, so making a commitment to make a pair of earrings each week will most definitely be good for me!

If you missed Linda's post yesterday (where were you?!) then you can read the full (but easy) rules for the challenge and find out how to sign up here. In a nutshell, though, all you need to do is make a pair of earrings a week, use a pair of art beads or art components, show your creations off and let us know who made the beads you've used, and yes, you can use beads or components you have made yourself. Please do, we would love to see them!

The AJE team are looking forward to discovering some new (well, new to us!) bead artists as the challenge progresses, but for now, to hopefully help get some ideas flowing I thought that I'd show you some of the beads and components I've been thinking of using. I've tried to pick some of my favourites that you wouldn't necessarily think of using in earrings at first glance. Rebekah's beautiful turquoise horse beads are a perfect example of this - they would make a great pair of earrings but if it wasn't for this challenge my first thought would be to use them in a necklace or a bracelet instead. I've included beads and charms of all materials in the Etsy treasury below, and even some buttons too.
