Happy La Fheile Padraig!

Or, in other words, Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Simply put, St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) is the celebration of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick.  The day celebrates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrating the heritage of Ireland.

Quickly, St. Patrick was kidnapped at 16, spent years working as a slave, and found God while a slave. He is credited with trying to convert pagans to Christianity in Ireland, and explained the Trinity with the three leaves of the Shamrock. It's the one day during the Lenten season that restrictions on eating and drinking are lifted.

As the color green is associated with St. Patrick's Day, I thought I'd highlight some pretties from the AJE team!

I hope you enjoyed the green, and maybe found something you need to have to celebrate Spring!  thanks for stopping by today!

Folklore Friday:

Hello!
As you read this - I am at Bead Fest in Philly. I am selling, buying, chatting, teaching... and there may be coffee and wine in there somewhere too. Please enjoy this post; it was the first in a series of folklore/birthstone pieces I wrote for Beads of Clay. I look forward to reprising these, and finishing the zodiac here on AJE!

Peridot, the August birthstone...

The green of summer! Lush plants blooming in the sunshine! Peridot gets its green color from iron, and is always green. Its a fragile stone ( 6.5 on the Moh's scale) softer than all of the other translucent gems; only one step harder than glass! Its formed from olivine, and like diamonds is formed under the Earths's crust - brought to light by volcanic activity.

The name stems from the Greek "Peridona" meaning plentiful. This refers to the attributes of peridot - not its availability. It was believed to protect the wearer from evil spirits and adversity.  It is believed to be a stone of increase, bringing warmth, prosperity and well being to the wearer.

My peridot palette: Peridot chips in the center, paired with my ceramic pendants in related hues and silks from Marsha Neal Studio.

A few historical notes on Peridot:

  • The oldest examples are Egyptian, dating back to 2000 BC. Peridot was plentiful on the island of Zabargad, off the Egyptian coast in the Red Sea.
  • The Romans called peridot "Emerald of the evening" as its color is more intense in gentle light.
  • Medieval metal smiths were introduced to Peridot after the Crusades "imported" goods from the Middle East. It was used in reliquaries and ecclesiastical items like the Shrine of the Magi in Cologne Cathedral. (on the left)
  • Peridot is mined in Burma, China, Arizona, and Pakistan - where new mining in the 1990's created a resurgence and renewed interest in the stone.
  • The largest faceted specimen? The Smithsonian in DC - toping the scales at 310 carats! (opening pix)
  • In 2003 NASA observed large areas of the planet Mars covered in peridot! So much for the 'red' planet...

Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think and how you used peridot in your designs.

Pantone Spring Colors Part 2

Wow, it's been a whole month since I last wrote a post here.  At the time, readers expressed interest in having me write another piece on the Spring 2013 Pantone colors.

As a reminder, these are the colors that Pantone determined will be big this Spring.

In monochrome, it might look like this, but that's pretty boring.

So today let's look at combining some of these colors with one another and other accent colors.
The Pantone color palette leans heavily toward greens this spring. Pantone chose Emerald as their color of the year.  The other two greens are Tender Shoots  and Grayed Jade.

I scoured Pinterest for inspiring color combinations that included these greens.  You can find color inspirations anywhere, from shower curtains to print ads to interior design.  Once you open your eyes to it, you will find the Pantone colors everywhere.  Any of these sources can make you want to run straight to your studio and start designing.

Here are some inspiring color combos that include emerald green.  Think of malachite when you want an affordable emerald colored stone bead.

Serpentine is the perfect stone to use for the Tender Shoots color.  Here are some Tender Shoots color combinations to whet your appetite.

(Love this one!)

And finally, here are some combinations with Grayed Jade.  I think of this as being the color of amazonite.

So now lets think of designing jewelry in all these luscious colors.  Here's a color chart with some matching stones.  This should help you get started, along with the stones I mentioned above.

Now its time to kick it up a notch by adding artisan beads and components!

This focal bead from Glass Addictions would make a striking centerpiece in an emerald green, white and yellow necklace!

I love the combination of green and copper.  It is a combination you might want to consider in your designs too.  These gorgeous earrings come from Kristi Bowman Designs.  She has loads of wonderful copper components too, to make your designs really unique. Picture wearing these earrings with a beige dress accented by a pretty green, peach and white silky scarf.  Yum!

I love this bronze pendant from THEAtoo.  I'm thinking that it would look awesome paired with the star components and the smaller flower links from Starry Road Studio, (pictured below).

This pretty trio from Mellismatic Art Jewelry is just crying out to be paired with serpentine and turquoise beads, with a touch of purple and dark green, too.

Here's a pair of earrings from Linda Landig Jewelry that is perfect for spring and summer wear.

For those of you on the east coast of the US, I assure you that even though you got a foot or two of snow last week spring will be coming.  So don't despair.  Just start designing your spring jewelry now.  There's lots of inspiration here to kick start your imagination.  Have fun!

P.S. Don't forget that the AJE Earring Challenge Reveal is this Sunday, Feb. 17th.  The Linky Tool will be posted on our blog Saturday evening.

AJE Eye Candy - The Greens of Summer

We had a beautiful weekend here in the Pacific NW,
we've had only a handful of 70 degree days all year
and we doubled that number this weekend.
So this weeks Eye Candy is a tribute to that!
