New Studio Happenings

My studio is ever crowded by beads in various stages of completion—there's very rarely a day that goes by that I'm not taking hot beads out of the oven, painting said beads, and scrubbing the remnants of polymer clay and paint off my hands. (Actually the paint usually stays for a few days until it wears off. My hands and nails often look a bit like a gardener's… if soil was multi-colored!) I love this job!

But every so often I need to create something new, something that isn't polymer clay, or at least isn't all polymer clay.

Lately that something new has been jewelry…

I'm so happy to be making jewelry again! It's been a few years since I've made it regularly and I'm so excited to start designing again. Jewelry making is what started me on the path of bead making, but in all the flurry of making a gazillion sleepy critters, I was beginning to forget the part of me that loves to string beads and wrap wire. Almost. So I've decided to start allowing myself a little studio time devoted to jewelry making only. Ahhh! It's so good to be back at it again.

And here are other new things I'm playing with these days:
Soft tan suede, a wood burning tool, and a crazy idea I've been wanting to pursue for eons!

Almost as much as I love painting, I love doodling and doodling with something that can fry your fingers really, really good, just adds to the fun, don't you think?

Of course, I had to paint some too.

And making new leather feather components leads to more new jewelry…

"Fly with Painted Wings"

What new things have you been inspired to create this year? Any old favorites you've just picked up again? It's a new year — even if we are already halfway through the second month — there's no better time to start making time to create a few things that really make you happy! What are those happy things for you? Do share!

I have a wood burning tool that hasn't seen the light of day in years (don't know why i have one )
this has inspired me to use some of my leather scraps that i had no idea what to use them for, thanks for the inspiration. and so glad you have made time to do something you love just for the pleasure of it.

    1. I'm so happy you're inspired Deb! I've never once burned wood with my wood burning tool… I actually did buy it originally for burning leather, but after using it twice or so, I hadn't used it in ages. That was back before I was really into jewelry making, so I'm really happy that it's in use again. I hope you'll bring yours out to play with too!

I was also really smitten with your cuff, and the methods you used to put it all together (I read that whole post while drooling). 1. Thank you so much!! Yes, more feathers are in the making now and will hopefully be in my shop in the next week or so. Right now I'm dreaming up color combos and a few new patterns. I really am so thrilled to be creating jewelry again—it's like finding a part of myself that I've been missing for a very long time—it just feels so right. :-)

    1. Thank you Sandi! I'm pretty sure I'll have to keep a few from the new batch to make jewelry for myself (I have been just awful about hoarding my latest jewelry creations!)… and maybe to write a few jewelry tutorials too. :-)

    1. Thank you Lesley! There's really nothing so fun as pursing a little imaging and seeing where it ends up. I'm so lucky to be a part of this awesome group—you ladies inspire me to push myself further everyday.

  6. How fun to return to an old love! And SO glad you did! I am still knocked out by the cuff you made with Jenny's component, you really need to be making jewelry as you clearly have a gift for using beads as well as making them! Your feather components are just gorgeous, I love your subtle painting. They really look fabulous with the beaded beads too.

    1. Oh, it surely is! It's strange how something that I so enjoyed was really fairly easily forgotten, but now that I'm back in it again, I'm seeing ideas that I had only briefly envisioned come into the light finally… and so much better than I had hoped they ever would be. Thank you Keirsten—coming from someone whose talent I so admire, your comments mean so very much to me.

    1. Thanks Linda! Me too. Now I just need to find a balance—some days I'm wanting to bypass bead making altogether and dive into jewelry making instead. ;-)

    1. Thanks Jen! I have been so busy in bead-mode, that I sometimes found myself wondering how exactly a new bead idea would be used… or would it be used at all… So, you could say making jewelry has some business points too (I'm working on my excuses, incase I need them.) I'm really hoping to do more than a few jewelry how-to posts in the future too. :-)

  10. OMG. Leather feathers? Swoon! I just bought a whole mess of leather scraps. Not sure what I am going to do with them, but your inventiveness and playful spirit have inspired me! I am itching to get to metal. Hopefully my shipment will arrive soon! Enjoy the day. Erin

    1. Oooh what fun! Definitely share a few photos if you end up burning some of that new leather "mess"—I would love to see what you dream up! Metal?! Now, that is really something I want to try so badly. I have a sneaking feeling though, that if I got my hands on metal, polymer would be down for more than a good while. ;-) I can't wait to see what you make!
