Limitless Possibilities

art history notes slides coffee and biscuits
Last minute cramming for my art history final; fueled by coffee and Crabtree and Evelyn Christmas Pudding Biscuits

I took my last final of the semester yesterday. I am not going to sugarcoat it...this semester was HARD. Not because of the work. It was the normal amount of challenging yet interesting. I learned so much more about art history, and by extension, world history. Somehow I avoided world history in high school.

I also learned how to draw. Again, I somehow managed to avoid taking art class in high school. Not because I tried to avoid art class, but because my "arts" elective was the high school newspaper. I had every intention of being a newspaper reporter when I grew up. I didn't become a journalist or grow up (probably).

No, this semester was hard because I just didn't want to do the work. I very much enjoy interacting with people and learning new things, but I'm done with homework. DONE. I spent the entire semester dreaming up all the things I could be doing instead of what I was doing. At this point, I know I need to take at least a semester off rather than continuing to pay for something that I don't have the heart to do right now.

As the semester was winding down, I started thinking very seriously about my goals, wants and needs...much more than the normal "end of the calendar year" goal setting we all seem to do in the days immediately surrounding January 1 (which is only TWO WEEKS AWAY, people!). Then some interesting links caught my attention which have sort of affected my goals.

#1 - I accidentally came across a planner on Kickstarter called the Spark Planner, which looks amazing, but they were already sold out on December deliveries, they are more expensive than doing a regular bullet journal, and they had an option of getting a free PDF (see update about the PDF at the bottom of this post!) if sharing the Kickstarter link on social media. So I went that route so I can explore what the Spark Planner is about to possibly order it later down the road. The PDF is pretty amazing and the Spark Planner would make a fantastic planner. But that's not even the best part.

I am now on the email list, which is not usually a great thing, especially this time of year when companies are sending 2 and 3 emails EVERY SINGLE DAY. However, being on Kate Matsudaira's email list has resulted in one email each week; which have been very valuable. The last two emails have included worksheets for planning for the upcoming year. They are not necessarily only business driven, but are broad enough to include anything. Lucky for everyone, the first worksheet is posted on the spark notebook blog. I assume this means the second one will be posted as well, which I hope is the case. This particular worksheet has been extremely thought provoking for me and now that school is done, I look forward to actually making notes on it. It primarily delves into personal relationships and what people will say about you at your funeral and what you want your legacy to be. Like I said, very thought provoking.

In spite of the beauty of the Spark Planner, I am still very dedicated to my bullet journal method of planning my life. But I'm always on the lookout for something better. I will continue the bullet journal, but alter it, and incorporate some of these spark planner goals/journal entries, etc in my bullet journal. My current bullet journal is about half full, but the spine is falling apart (it was a clearanced piccadilly journal from Barnes and Noble) so I ordered a Leuchtturm 1917 medium squared, which reviewers swear is a high quality notebook/journal. Also, quite frankly, I like the idea of starting a new bullet journal for the new year. It's an empty book of possibilities!

#2 - As I mentioned, I took a drawing class this semester. On the first day of class the teacher made us draw three pictures as a skill baseline. We had to draw our hand (mine looked more alien than human), a full portrait of someone we know from memory (HA! My husband might leave me if he ever saw how I drew him), and we had to do a self portrait while looking in the mirror. He had us write our impressions on the back of these pictures. On my self portrait I said I didn't have a nose because I had erased it so many times because it looked too much like male genitals. Anyway, my new drawing skills were VERY hard won. One of my biggest personal goals is to continue to develop them and delve into more media, trying things out, seeing what speaks to me. I don't remember how or where, but this yearlong online mixed media and art journaling course called Wanderlust came to my attention. After thinking about it for a while, seeing the class schedule, and the very good price, I decided to sign up.

In addition to the above, I'm excited to get back to the studio on a regular basis. When I don't have classes, I'm playing catch-up in all the other areas of my life. My studio desperately needs a purge and reorganization. This is my number one priority once Christmas is over.

My extremely messy studio

Because I love learning and hate homework, one of my big goals is to attend classes of interest when I can get to them. A high priority is to increase my metalworking and beadweaving skills. It's been a long time since I've taken any fun technique based classes. I've kind of become obsessed with beadweaving, even attempting my first glass cabochons. Yes, I will be making lots more. In addition I definitely want to feed my glass skills. I've barely done any lampworking in the last 1.5 years.

I want to feed my brain in other ways. More reading, less time plugged in. I finish several audibooks a year with all the time I spend driving, but I need to spend quality time with regular books and magazines and less time with pop culture type junk articles. I also want to bind more books after my one experience with Jenny teaching us how at the lake house bead retreat a few months ago.

I also have big plans to do some home improvement projects and some volunteering, continue with running and maybe setting some new goals with that. I am super excited to get started! With the weight of homework off my shoulders, I feel like the possibilities are endless and I'm ready to start today. However, first I am going to spend some quality time enjoying the Christmas season, watch some Christmas movies, eat cookies, wrap presents and decorate the house.

What types of goals do you have? How do you keep track of these goals and when will you begin to implement them?

Update: I just saw this on the Spark Notebook Facebook page

New Years Resolutions - 6 Months in

Can you believe it’s mid year all ready? The time has flown by and I’ve heard mention of the “C” word already!

This week, I’ve been thinking about my January post where members of the AJE team shared their plans for the New Year. Today, I thought I’d catch up with everyone and see whether we’ve stuck to our plans, failed miserably or ended up somewhere completely different!

Where has this year taken you so far?

Lesley Watt

Good progress with the components with more original and thematic designs... Dipped toe with the sketching and larger clay pieces but still want to do more...I've not made that much jewellery but what I have made has been more technique based...No progress on books yet.

My year has been productive! New experiments and a new series developing of pendants in porcelain. New tile designs being ads to the Mythic Nature line. And shows, many shows. I have been neglecting the personal/inspirational side of things. My pile of books is no smaller, but Ive been reading plenty of fiction. My artists journal got stalled due to travel and shows. At mid year I am reevaluating and trying to reinstate my journal practice and give myself permission to read!

-My first goal was to continue developing my skill in ceramics. I'm doing that.-Next goal was to get a feeling for my personal style in ceramics. That's def going to take more time.-Did some drawing in Oaxaca, as planned.-Haven't done much in the way of wire work, except to have made a small supply of handmade ear wires, while in Oaxaca.

What resolutions? I made resolutions? ::blink::
Karen’s intentions for this year were to get back to daily art journalling, but that was sidetracked when she started a new job in UX Design. It sounds fantastic and she gets to hang out with some pretty cool co-workers!

Things are coming along for me.
Slower than I'd hoped, but progress is progress and I can't complain! New leather stuff is finally happening! No new critters yet, but I have been making new beads… and old beads in new colors to change things up a bit. Right now I'm really focused on efficiency and I'm designing beads around that idea. I'm very patient when it comes to art, but long production time is limiting to me. My goal is still the same: maintain what I'm currently doing and get more time for fun (non-bead related fun once in a while is nice!) and family.

A water disaster turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I was able to do a few things in my house that would not have gotten done otherwise. That prompted a large garage clean out and some other rooms were organized as well. Still searching for the creativity muse that's hid somewhere.

I haven't made time for the drawing class I wanted to take, but otherwise I feel like I'm making lots of progress towards the other goals. I spent a whole week with Connie Fox at our retreat in March digging into the elements of design - it has profoundly changed my working process and style. I also walked through a process with her of discovering what I'm trying to say with my work - it was an intensely personal and eye-opening experience and I feel freer in my creative efforts than I ever have. As a result, I've gotten much better about scheduling and protecting my creative time, maybe because I'm enjoying it more.

I haven't really accomplished any of those goals as I have been too focused on getting straight A's in my college classes towards an art degree and not neglecting my family too much. However, I signed up for a drawing class for the fall semester (it helps that it's required I take drawing classes to get an art degree). I did talk to my advisor about the fact I do not have any drawing skills and that my artwork up until now has been mainly glass and metals which did not require I even be able to draw a stick figure. As for balancing school, home and studio time, that hasn't happened at all. As for journaling, I have started a bullet journal, which has helped contain everything plus encourages me to journal a few days a week.

The only goal I met was continuing to play with metal clay! I didn't get a chance yet to try cloissone, but do have Pam East's Enameling on Copper Clay DVD and am getting ready to experiment with that. My personal blog has not improved!

And for me?

Well getting back to sketching lasted for an entire drawing, I like it though and it feels good to get things out of your system when you need to. I've played with metal clay, although I was only brave enough to try out some bronze, the silver is still in the packet.  I’ve cranked up the pottery wheel and managed to practise a few times, I even produced a wobbly cup! And being more organised… well I don’t think that’s ever going to happen! I have plan in place for the rest of the year though, and that's to keep practising on my wheel and creating bigger work. I have a new kiln on the way so I can fire larger items... we'll see how that works out in another six months!

I think we've all done pretty well so far!

So how about you, our readers? Have you managed to stick to your plans? let us know how your resolutions are working out so far in the comments!

A Review and Looking Forward

I can't believe we're already on the 2nd week of January! All our Christmas decorations are still up (we went on vacation to NYC on the 1st and just got back), and it seems like the whirlwind of parties and get togethers was just a couple days ago.

Lights viewed through snowflake colored lenses.

I haven't gotten much studio time in the last month except to assemble gifts for family and friends. No torching. I'm craving some quality time with my torch, but it's going to have to wait until the temperature gets above the single digits. At least we're in the black now...

2013 was a great year! I came up with some new design concepts that I was really happy with.

The copper spiral headpins encased in glass idea came to me one night as I was drifting off to sleep and I had to get up and write it down so I wouldn't forget.

New glass "headpins". Transparent encasing swirl of copper wire. #lampwork

And if you know my work at all, you know I am obsessed with murrini. I don't make my own. Rather, I buy from those who have more patience, practice, and talent.

Look who got new candy to use in their beads. #glassaddictions #lampwork

I became obsessed with using them to make these encased murrini headpins

Glass headpin display #beadfest #glassaddictions #aje #artjewelryelements #lampwork

I made a TON of these headpins and have sold and used a bunch of them. They're like having a bowl of candy sitting out. You have to keep going back for just one more.

I also came up with these bubble beads (I also do them on headpins). I came up with the idea when I was thinking about some of the glass fusing I used to do. This was one of my favorite techniques, but I wasn't sure if it would translate in the flame. It did!

Experiments from yesterday using a trick from my fusing days. Wasn't sure if it would translate well into beads. So excited it worked!

I also started making beads using a new technique I haven't seen being done on beads anywhere else after having a dream about it. (I seriously need to sleep more!)

Of course I continued with the Nightmare Insomnia series, trying out new "bases" for the glass end caps that make it a Nightmare Insomnia bead. The first one uses murrini because I can barely stand making a bead without it:

NightmareInsomniaMurini

This 2nd one was inspired by mercury glass (even though it doesn't look much like it, you'll have to trust me on this. lol!:

I got to go to Bead Fest for the first time and meet some of my AJE team in person for the first time as well!

What kind of plans do I have for 2014?

Well...I started my first Kumihimo practice project last month using leftover sock yarn.

Trying kumihimo for the 1st time using leftover sock yarn.

First kumihimo braid so far. Using leftover sock #yarn.

What I love about kumihimo is that it's portable and I can do it while watching tv or chatting with someone. I would like further play with that technique and learn more advanced techniques like adding beads to the weave. You can see some examples using this link to Pinterest using search term beaded kumihimo.

I would also love to further explore techniques I developed last year and to come up with new bead designs.

Most of all, I believe 2014 is going to be a year of internal reflection. I have never been much of a journal writer. I kind of hate it. But there are times I wish I was.

And I have questions....where I'm going as a business (if anywhere), as a person, and whether I want to perhaps go back to school. For what? I have no idea. But my kids are getting to the age where I should consider what I'm doing once they're in college and I'm an "empty nester."

I am pretty sure the answers are buried within me somewhere. I just have to find them, finesse them to the surface.

Also, I ADORE all the art journals I see being made. That's kind of a goal, but mine will be far simpler. Because I'm a simple girl. And if I have a difficult time putting pen to paper, how difficult will it be to drag out all the art supplies, work on journal pages, then have to put them all away again? I can tell you. Impossible.

I am starting with this, the notebook my husband gave me for Christmas. It's simple, not beautiful. I won't worry about "ruining" it. He wrote a sweet, heartfelt note on the first page and sketched a scene of a Christmas tree with presents underneath. I love that guy.

Notebook

On a related note, I would like to learn bookbinding and maybe how to sketch without it looking similar to a toddler's first time with a crayon. And incorporate these new skills into my jewelry making. Look at this super creative miniature journal by Sarah Fawcett

She makes the most clever miniature journals.

So that's about it for me. What new things would you like to learn, make, or do this year?

Have a great week and stay warm!
